Behind the Cards

Stripey Jumper Greeting Cards

Ever wondered how your favourite cards came to be? No? Well, we're going to tell you anyway, in this exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Amanda range.

1. Inspiration strikes
The idea for "Amanda" came from wondering why no-one has done a range of cards built around a girl who behaves badly. Several of our friends provided inspiration for this character (you know who you are!) Card ideas were roughly sketched out by Dave, who is still puzzled as to why his drawings weren't used on the final cards.

Pages from Dave's sketchbook.
You can win an expensive prize if you have any idea what he's drawn.

2. More ideas are developed.

3. The final scenes
The final 12 "scenes" for the cards are chosen and more finished drawings are done by Liz. These are sent to a photographer with a description of the type of model we want for the photos.

4. Meanwhile, in Australia,
Ace photographer Greg Bartley has been scouting for a model who can portray "Amanda." Fortune smiles on all of us as 25-year-old model/actress Amanda Dow walks into Greg's studio. She has recently relocated from Queensland to Sydney and needs some promotional shots taken. He sends her photo to Dave and Liz back in New Zealand and "Amanda" is found!

5. June, 2004:
The Amanda photographs are taken at Shoot Studios, just
north of Sydney.

Assistant photographer Chris Maait kindly portrayed the "bloke with spaghetti over his head."
